Goldfish come from ancient China and were also considered the royal fish and soon became a symbol of the imperial family, representing fortune and good luck. Goldfish have become some of the most prolific domesticated fish, currently displaying astounding diversity in color, pattern, size, and shape.

Characteristics of Goldfish

Goldfish characteristics are they have 2 sets of paired fins and 3 sets of single fins. They do not have scales on their heads. And also they don't have teeth and instead crush their food in their throats. They generally have exceptionally large eyes, goldfish are the most beautiful fish.

Origin of Goldfish

Goldfish were domesticated in China more than a thousand years ago, so basically the origin of goldfish belongs to China. In wid, goldfish can be found in slow-moving, freshwater bodies of water. They are basically carp, they belong to the Cyprinidae family, one of the most popular fish in aquariums is goldfish.

Goldfish are most popular because of their beautiful and attractive color, but They are normally grey or green, breed like crazy and you get variations of colors and shapes. They have a smattering of pigment cells that are red or gold.

In the 19th century, in goldfish mutants, when captured by fishermen, a mutation would have suppressed the grey pigment cells, allowing the yellow and red ones to be expressed. Humans took a mutation and made a Species of themself.

Behavior of Goldfish

Goldfish are one of the most beautiful aquarium fish. They are social fish and they have the ability to learn by association. The behavior of goldfish is non-aggressive to goldfish or any other fish. Only Male goldfish become aggressive during the mating season, they chase the female goldfish.

They hide behind a plant or in a cave when they feel in danger. They also love to eat their own eggs If these are not removed from the aquarium.

Can Goldfish change color?

Yes, goldfish change their color, it's due to various factors- diet, amount of light exposure, genetics, maturing and aging, water quality, or some cases of disease or illness. Basically, it's a normal situation where some goldfish change their scale coloration from Orange to black or from black to orange as they age. If you see any signs that their scales are pale and start to lose their brightness then your goldfish may have a problem.

Size, weight, and color of Goldfish

The size of goldfish totally depends upon how you keep them. Like in small indoor aquariums, your goldfish tend to stay about 1 inch (2.5cm) to 2 Inches (5.1cm) long. If you put your goldfish in a bigger aquarium it may grow longer. 

The maximum growth of goldfish is 23 inches (59cm) and a maximum weight of 9.9 pounds (4.5kg).

There are a variety of colors you find in goldfish including red, orange, blueish-grey, brown, yellow, white, and black. The most common variation is a shiny orange, and the second most common color is a mix of white and red and orange and white.

Environment

Goldfish are commonly found in rivers, streams, lakes, ponds, reservoirs, and virtually every freshwater habitat. You should never be kept in bowls, in small Aquariums, or any unfiltered container; it may harm your goldfish. Basically goldfish like plants, a variety of foods, and a large clean aquarium with a stress-free environment.

They also need a lot of filtration because they produce a lot of waste and it should be cleaned. Goldfish are one of the cold-water species of fish but can also be kept successful at warmer temperatures also.

Life expectancy

The lifespan of goldfish or any other living being totally depends upon, what they eat, the environment, water, etc are some of the factors which depend upon the lifespan of goldfish or any other living beings. If you put your goldfish in a bowl they will Lucky live for one year, or if you do things right and perform frequent water changes, the maximum lifespan in a bowl will be 2 to 3 years. If you want more life for your goldfish, put it into a large aquarium then the lifespan becomes 10 to 15 years or more.

Diet of Goldfish

Goldfish are omnivorous, they eat plants, insects (such as mosquito larvae), zooplankton, and small crustaceans. And some other foods for goldfish are freeze-dried Tubifex worms, bloodworms, brine shrimp, and vegetation, such as boiled peas and lettuce they all are good supplement food for your goldfish.
